2) In Somalia, almost everyone is a Sunni Muslim. The second "biggest" religion is Orthodox Christianity, but there are only about 1,000 of them in the country. 3) The largest religion in Somalia, by far, is Sunni Islam. It is a monotheistic, universalizing religion. They worship the Judeo-Christian God, and they call him Allah. They see the prophet Muhammed as the final prophet of God. Since the religion is universalizing, the holidays are based off of important events in the founder's life, in this case Muhammed. 4) Like I said before, Islam is by far the most widespread and popular religion in Somalia. The Somali practice Sunni Islam, so they believe that Muhammed was correct to choose Abu Bakr to be the caliph after the former's death, unlike the Shia, who believe that Muhammed's son-in-law, Ali, should have been the next caliph. Somalis practice the Shaf'i sect of Sunni Islam. It is practiced by about 15% of all Muslims worldwide. They specifically believe in the ideas of Abu Abdullah ash-Shafi'i (767-820). Shaf'i is considered to be one of the more conservative schools of Sunni Islam. 5) Somalia has been ridden with violence, and it still goes on today. Sufi clerics, who were originally men of peace, started to fight back when the Al-Shabab began to destroy their shrines and murder their imams. Groups like these Sufi scholars are what the Western countries are relying on to repel Somalia's Islam extremists. Despite these men probably never haven fought with guns, they became the first local group to go head-to-head with the Al-Shabab and win. These Islamic extremists are what many people see the Islam religion as, but those people are completely false. As we saw by the Sufi going into combat with these extremists-and winning-shows that a lot of these people that many call terrorists are actually braver than they will ever be.
